Help Families Build Resilience: Register for the Oct. 1 Seminar

Maryville and the Stephen Sexton Training Institute invite you to attend “ACEs: Helping Families Build Resilience” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at Maryville’s Stevens Center, 1150 N. River Road in Des Plaines.

Adverse childhood experiences, commonly known as ACEs, can have lasting effects on a child’s health, development and overall well-being. This timely seminar will explore the science behind childhood adversity and provide valuable insight into how families, professionals and communities can help children heal, build resilience and thrive.

The program will feature Jennifer Samartano, a prevention specialist with Prevent Child Abuse Illinois, along with a panel of experts who will share professional perspectives and practical strategies for supporting children and families.

Participants will also view “Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope,” a powerful documentary examining the effects of toxic stress on children’s developing brains and bodies — and the promising approaches that can help change their life trajectories.

Continuing education units will be available. Registration and breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m.

Space is limited to 200 participants. Reserve your place today and join us for an important conversation about transforming adversity into resilience and hope.

Panel discussion featuring five experts:

  • Heather Kendall, senior programs manager of NAMI Cook County North Suburban
  • Lisa Hassler Thomas, Ph.D., ATR, LCO, art therapist of United Stand
  • Ilinca Wallace, Ph.D., regional council manager of Birth to Five Illinois
  • Victoria Poklop, social worker of the Des Plaines Police Department
  • Sarah Melgarejo, clinical director of Maryville Academy
