Maryville Crisis Nursery’s Trunk or Treat brings families together for Halloween fun

Maryville’s Crisis Nursery welcomed families Saturday, Oct. 24, for its sixth annual Trunk or Treat, bringing the community together for a day of Halloween fun.
Children enjoyed games, pumpkin decorating, snacks, arts and crafts and plenty of candy. The event drew familiar faces, including families who traveled from Chicago’s South Side to participate.
“This event is about bringing the community and families together in a safe space for kids to be able to trick-or-treat,” said Fred Smith, administrator of community services. “It also gets the word out about the Crisis Nursery, about how we can assist families in their times of need.”
Smith emphasized a principle central to the Crisis Nursery’s work: Families define their own crises. Staff members take pride in offering support that responds to each family’s circumstances and providing a community where families can turn for help.
“This is what community engagement looks like, bringing communities together, and creating lasting memories!” said Alejandra Ortiz, program director. “When we come together, we do more than host an event; we strengthen the community we serve.”
Families and staff from the Maryville Academy Mother’s Recovery Home also attended, along with children and staff from Saint Catherine of Siena and the Children’s Healthcare Center.
Thank you to the families, staff and volunteers who helped make this year’s Trunk or Treat a welcoming celebration for the community.
