Acts of kindness shine at Maryville Youth Center’s annual coat drive

The Maryville Youth Center welcomed families and community members on December 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., for the annual Cortez Cares Coat Drive. The event, spearheaded by Cortez Smith of the Cortez Cares Foundation, provided children and adults with new coats, hats, gloves and essential winter supplies to help keep them warm during the colder months.
Throughout the event, families selected items in a welcoming, supportive setting created by Maryville Youth Center staff and volunteers. The coat drive not only provided material assistance but also fostered a sense of hope and care for residents in the Austin community.
Cortez said the opportunity to give back to this neighborhood holds deep meaning for him. “It is a dream come true because we never really have a lot of resources growing up here and we know this neighborhood is going to stay and about to elevate,” he said. His foundation continues to partner with local organizations like Maryville to meet immediate needs and uplift young people.
Kim Williams, program director of CYO, which oversees the Maryville Youth Center, shared her gratitude for Cortez’s efforts. “This event reminds our families that they are seen, valued and supported,” she said. “We are grateful for Cortez and his team for helping our young people face winter with confidence and comfort.”
The coat drive also highlighted the ongoing collaboration between Maryville, community partners and neighborhood leaders who work together to strengthen families. Staff noted that the event helped ease a seasonal burden for many families while reinforcing Maryville’s mission of protecting children and strengthening families.
We thank Cortez Smith, the Cortez Cares Foundation, Jordan Brand, Scott Riley of Be the Flow Wellness and all volunteers who helped make this year’s coat drive a warm and meaningful success for our Maryville Youth Center community.
