PROGRAM DIRECTOR

  • Why did you choose to work at Maryville?

I choose to work at Maryville after learning that it began as an orphanage in 1883. Its mission remains very much the same to this day. This showed me that Maryville has made a personal commitment to help society’s most vulnerable children so that they become educationally proficient, economically productive and socially responsible members of their communities.

  • What do you want people to know about Maryville?

That Maryville has one of the most highly trained team of professionals of any residential campuses in the nation. Our goal is to help children develop coping skills, and to help them put behind their problems and issues that have become barriers to their happiness and success. Maryville provides young people, who are placed in our care, a chance to grow in an enriched and structured program.

  • What are you most proud of?

I am proud that I can assist with changing lives and changing the future for so many youth while working at Maryville. Maryville is intelligently planned and effectively supervised and makes a very special contribution to society. As I see it, there are several basic ingredients that have consistently occurred that makes Maryville a great institution. They are: (1) goals, (2) staff of the right kind, (3) a therapeutic atmosphere, (4) adequate involvement by the leadership, and (5) a careful, periodic and competent evaluation of what has been accomplished.

  • What gives you most joy?

It is my good fortune that during all of my professional life, I have had the opportunity to be active in developing, supervising and evaluating good programs. I have worked with at-risk youth who have been involved in the Dept. of Children and Family Service or the juvenile justice system. Although it is a very difficult job to assist young people with healing from emotional and behavioral challenges, I believe deeply and unshakably in the potential of a human being to change. With me there are no hopeless cases, only people who feel hopeless. Working with the youth at Maryville has brought me much joy.
