Jen School gets ready for reopening with blended classes

https://www.dailyherald.com/submitted/20201007/jen-school-gets-ready-for-reopening-with-blended-classes

On a recent home visit, Maryville Jen School Instructional Assistant Douglas Roberson, left, and Chris, Jen School student, took a walk along Lake Michigan to catch up. During these home visits, Jen School staff checks on students’ well-being and makes sure they have what they need while attending remote learning classes.

After doing remote learning for more than six months, Maryville Jen School, led by Principal Anne Craig, has made the decision to have all its students return to the Des Plaines campus Monday, Oct. 19. It will be a blended remote learning plan, with half of the students physically attending at a time.

The plan, according to Craig, is to rotate the students. There will be a gold and blue week with students attending four classrooms each week, splitting them in two groups; while half the students are in-person, half will be remote. To prepare for the Oct. 19 reopening, Jen School faculty will return Oct. 15 for training.

“The start of school year 2020-2021 has by far been the most unique start to any school year in memory,” said Craig. “None of us could have imagined kicking off the new school year from our homes, let alone being online six months ago when we first heard of COVID-19 and social distancing.”

Craig added that despite the many challenges, Jen School students, faculty and staff have made the school year already successful with their understanding, assistance, and flexibility.

“Our students have done a remarkable job adjusting to this new way of learning, engaging and taking ownership of their education,” said Craig. “They have shown true resiliency during these unpredictable times, and I am so impressed and proud of them.”

Craig thanks staff, students and their parents for their patience as reopening plans are continually developed and refined.

“Our priority continues to be, and will remain, the health and safety of everyone,” Craig said.

Moving forward, she said, she and her staff will continue to look to state and local agencies for guidance to finalize plans.

Since remote learning was implemented in mid-March, Craig said that faculty and staff remained connected with their students through weekly home visits. Check-ins were performed on porches or outdoors while practicing safety and social distancing.

“We made sure that our students have what they need in terms of Wi-Fi connection, school supplies, food and other necessities,” said Craig.

Aside from participating in academic classes, students had vocational classes where they designed 3D projects online.

The physical absence of students this summer did not deter longtime volunteer master gardeners to continue with the Jen Organic Garden Program. The garden yielded a successful harvest and Jen School was able to donate 1,000 pounds of produce to Des Plaines and other local food pantries, and put together food baskets for students that were delivered to their homes.

Jen School is recognized as a National Association of Special Education Teachers School of Excellence seven years in a row, from 2014 to 2020. It strives to provide learning experiences through an instructor-mediated, experiential learning process. It believes and promotes lifelong learning with a strong focus on social and emotional growth.

Jen School provides integrated educational services for students ages 10 to 21 with emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities.

Maryville Academy celebrates 137 years; thanks staff, supporters

As Maryville Academy gears up for its 137th birthday on Friday, August 14, Executive Director Sister Catherine Ryan, O.S.F. shares the celebration will focus on Maryville staff and supporters – their dedication, hard work and service to caring for Maryville’s children and families.

“We stand on the shoulders of those who have developed Maryville during its 137 years,” Sister Cathy said. “How better to prepare for the future than to look to our colleagues who have been attending to the needs of our children for many years.”

Maryville, located on three campuses in Bartlett, Chicago and Des Plaines, was formerly St. Mary’s Training School. On August 14, 1883, the Governor of Illinois granted permission for St. Mary’s Training School to go ahead as an incorporated school that served as the home and education for the youth.

It was in 1950 when the children engaged in a contest to select a new name for St. Mary’s Training School.  The children “went to the polls” and chose the name “Maryville Academy” for their community. The campus in Des Plaines was often referred to as City of Youth.

Maryville’s growth and impact have touched thousands of lives. From its humble beginnings in 1883, Maryville today serves the community in six service areas: Behavioral Health Services, Early Childhood Services, Educational Services, Family Services, Jovenes Adelante Services and Residential Services.

Today, Maryville continues its mission of healing children, strengthening families, and building a better community. Maryville looks to the future, to the needs of children and to the ways Maryville can address these needs. Its leadership team and staff, and their many community supporters are steadfast in transforming the lives of more children and families, in helping them reach their fullest potential and in making a lasting difference in the next 137 years and beyond.

Maryville to host wine tasting and garden tour August 15

Maryville Academy will host its first Wine Tasting and Garden Tour, to benefit Maryville Jen School, on Saturday, August 15, at the Des Plaines campus on 1150 N. River Road.

Each guest will pay $25 to sample several wine varieties, enjoy individually boxed appetizers, a chance to tour the Jen School garden and more. The outdoor tent event offers three time slots: 3 to 4 p.m., 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. or 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Only 40 guests will be allowed at each hour to follow social distancing guidelines.

“We are very excited to host an event that has not been done before at Maryville,” Director of Development Megan Biasco said. “The event is a result of thinking outside the box after two of our April fundraisers were postponed due to the pandemic.”

Biasco hopes that the friendraising event will draw Maryville’s friends and supporters to the Des Plaines campus to support it. “Jen School is doing such a wonderful job with our students and the event’s success will be a big help,” Biasco added.

Jen School was selected by the National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) as a NASET School of Excellence for seven years in a row. It provides authentic and experiential learning opportunities in a structured and caring environment. It works with young people, ages 10 to 21, who face academic, emotional, behavioral or intellectual challenges.
