Using the senses fosters and nurtures the physical, cognitive, social, linguistic, and emotional development of the child. At our sensory table, we recently incorporated snow and colored rice bins. The children have absolutely loved being a part of making the snow as well as playing with the rice through various activities and games like I Spy and Simon Says. Sensory play has also included movement activities like creating an obstacle course using various equipment in the gym, and running and riding bikes through the obstacle course.
Through these interactive activities at the Crisis Nursery, the children have truly blossomed with regard to their engagement with peers, working together as a team, sharing, listening, following directions, imagination, and communication, all while having their sensory needs met.
